We love Hip Hop, but our love for entertainment is much bigger then just music. In this section we will delve into movies , from classics to current showings to upcoming features. So let's start this with one of my favorite genre of films, the martial arts movies.
I am a kung fu freak , to me it's an endearing term and for the last years I've been stuck with watching the classics to satisfy my cravings and then i stumbled upon Su Qi-Er or the legend of beggar su or true legend from famed choreographer turned director Woo-ping Yuen know to most for his work on the Matrix trilogy and Iron Monkey

Su Qi-Er, a wealthy man living during the Qing Dynasty who loses his fortune and reputation as a result of a conspiracy against him. After being forced out onto the streets, Su dedicates his life to martial arts and reemerges as a patriotic hero known as the "King of Beggars." Also said to have been the one who invented drunken fist.

Of course we've seen this story before but i find they put an interesting twist to a ``known`` legend, the fighting choreography is intense of course and it's somewhat brigs back the old styles of fighting we grew up watching also we get an appearence from our favorite shaolin monk Gordon liu. My only major problem with this movie which is separated in three parts in the life of beggar su is the last part where he needs to defend China's honor against the evil foreigners which is the same ending in fearless with Jet Li and the same ending from Ip Man 2 with Donnie Yen (which will get a review from us very soon).
with this being said i still recommend this movie , ill give it a 3.5 out of 5
Without a doubt!!!! I highly recommend this album!
Erykah Badu 6th album is a joy to listen to! More soul music than R&B
I will post a more extensive review by the end of this week The Urbalistshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07950918314766693908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8354822228542768714.post-25761955254828123232010-03-29T18:03:00.000-07:002010-03-30T04:04:23.423-07:00The Generational Gap: An OpinionAs we proceed to give you what you need ...
Well hip hop as failed me on that part , because what i needed was quality not quantity , it was hard work and work ethic and all i was given was a bland, process cheese like product ,where anybody with a computer and 5000 dollars to make a video could become a hit.I know you will tell me the game has changed and all that but it changed to what exactly. When the biggest seller is Lil Wayne, when you can't differentiate between mainstream and underground anymore but as much as i can blame the industry for giving me crap, i have to blame myself and you for accepting mediocrity in all form, the fact that we keep on buying what they put out , i buy because they sell and they sell because i buy: simple economics 101.

So lets see what failed in the system,
The conscious rapper who at one point was at the forefront of the scene has been relegated to the great void of the underground, it's like they have the plague, those whose name cannot be uttered. We understand it was never cool to read a book, never been cool to have gone to school, never been cool to be smarter then the average but conscious rap wasn't all about those things , it was always more, you didn't have to be book smart ,you could've been street smart .the greatest rappers to me are the best story tellers. for example: slick rick ; biggie smalls these rappers in the simplest but structurally tight verses brought you into the world they imagine for the duration of a song or for a complete album.there was no need to use big words and obscure references .you just had to tell a story.
Recently a study came out saying that the biggest sellers in hip hop were those who had lyrical content , like Jay-Z,
Eminem, and this one i find hilarious Lil Wayne (explanation on that one was that with age, he got more lyrical)
true in some sense he did and i praise him for the evolution but conscious rapper he's not.
A few lone soldiers are still clinging to the mainstream but it seems really for those in the know.

To be continued...

Ron "Amen-Ra" Lawrence is not what you would call a household name among regular hip-hop fans, but his pedigree has been vastly underrated over time. With his oftentimes partner and good friend Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie (which most of you know as The Mad Rapper), he has crafted a few classics in the second half of the 90's, and definitely helped create and cement Sean "Puffy" Combs' and Bad Boy Records' legacy as the powerhouse of mainstream hip-hop as part of The Hitmen collective.

His wide-ranging list of customers include LL Cool J, Puff Daddy, The Lox, Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, and of course the Notorious One, Biggie Smalls. Simply put: you may not know of him, or may not really see him as an active player these days, but rest assured he's definitely getting a steady stream of royalty checks from the RIAA from all his previous work. One of his now-famous clients got to benefit from his talent, as the one and only Jay-Z received one particular instrumental that some hardcore Hov fans still refer to as "his hardest song". From In My Lifetime Vol. I (1997), "Where I'm From" is one gritty concoction of street life mixed with hood pride, coated over a looped-up Yvonne Fair (a James Brown protegé) sample, hard drums and bass.

Mr. Lawrence will now see you in his office, and show you how he doctored one of the greatest Jay-Z tracks ever (and yes, kids, it is the "Angels" beat).

The Future will be our segment dedicated to the up-and-comers, the new burgeoning acts what we think will have an impact in hip-hop. For our very first piece, we take a look at a pioneer's lineage in Run's young son, Diggy Simmons.
In 1987, and through most of the early 80's, Hip-Hop used to be Run's House, which he co-owned with his partners DMC and the late, great Jam Master Jay. Two decades later, one of his sons would like to carry the torch and re-establish the Simmons name as a powerhouse in music and fashion. Enter 15-year-old Daniel "Diggy" Simmons, born from Run's second wife Justine (the one featured on MTV's "Run's House"). Diggy
seems to be on a mission to become a fashion icon, as his personal blog reveals his penchant for the most fashionable threads and kicks, name-dropping his personal favorites along the way. We all know how hip-hop and fashion is deeply embedded in the Simmons bloodline: from his uncle Russell's Def Jam and Phat Farm ventures, to his father's legendary Run DMC and their association with Adidas (the very first non-athletes to get an endorsement deal with an athletic apparel company), Diggy's moves shouldn't be so surprising at this point. So what about his rapping skills, you ask? Well, considering his tender age, we have to agree that he's already pretty promising so far; and that's not without saying there isn't room for development. Going off on Nas' classic "Made You Look", he flexes his lyrical muscle which makes for a couple interesting punchlines and a potent flow. Some of you will say that there's probably more than a few kids his age who can go off on a mic like this, but we can all agree that none of them have a rich, powerful uncle who can open doors for them, for better or worse. Will he eventually be worth the attention? You be the judge.
It used to be fun, inspired; it seemed to have a sense of purpose, from the party tracks of Kid 'N Play, the consciousness of Queen Latifah, to the street bravado of NWA. Sure, we can spend hours discussing the ins and outs of gangsta rap, but at first it came out as a outcry from the streets of Compton, as poverty and violence was almost exclusive to the East Coast rap scene (still a very minor sub-genre at the time) and they came out swinging, ready for a fight. Hip-Hop started going on a downhill slide to hell when money and hoes became standard, when gratuitous sex, violence and persona became more important than content, when swag became prevalent, and lyrics was left to the non-selling backpackers.
Former Aftermath protege, current Slaughterhouser Joell Ortiz just released his first video for his upcoming album, Free Agent. Although the beat itself isn't the 2010 standard (true diggers with recognize the Al Green sample which Premo also flipped for Rakim's "It Been A Long Time"), it still keeps it moving as Ortiz proves he's indeed very capable of, you know, writing songs which can appeal to a general audience. The video perfectly illustrates the lyrics. A winner in our book.
Originally hailing from New Orleans (admittedly not the mecca of complex, thoughtful lyricism in hip-hop music), Jay Elec has defied and broken any last stereotype of the typically predictable, under-lyrical, over-swaggerred Southern rapper by dropping a couple of interesting tracks and projects over the past 2 years, most notably "Act I - Eternal Sunshine" and even producing Nas' incredible intro "Queens Get The Money", from his Untitled album.

But how things have evolved for him since dropping the already-classic "Exhibit C" is almost unheard of for an underground so-called "lyrical" act. Going from "barely known" to being called the second coming of Nas is quite the leap indeed after just one song. "Exhibit C" even managed to crack iTunes' Top 10 Most Downloaded list when it was first released back in December. Since then, we've seen a multitude of rappers, from the obscure to the famous, trying to recreate their magic over that Just Blaze beat, most of them to no avail. Some even got clever and tried to spit on the previously released but just as stellar "Exhibit A", which had dropped in late 2008. But how nice is Jay Elec, really? We'll let you be the judge of that with our very first Notebook column. Below you'll find the song and also the lyrics for those you like to follow.
